Current regulations and conventional methods for detecting pathogens in drinking water systems result in temporally and spatially sparse data sets that do not provide adequate warning of potentially catastrophic contamination events. Continuous monitoring with on-line sensors is needed to better protect public health, but contaminant specific detection is considered impractical and cost-prohibitive given the variety of pathogenic contaminants that could be introduced into drinking water systems.
