Recital of Sacred Music to Benefit Children with Cataracts
Stouffville, ON, May 3, 2010 – Soprano Cathy Rempel Quicke will perform selections from her new CD “Psalms for Pilgrims” at two upcoming concerts in British Columbia.
Cathy, who is visually impaired, says all proceeds from the event will go to cbm Canada. “Cataract surgery for children is pretty close to my heart,” says the Vancouver resident.
Born with cataracts, Cathy knows the vital importance of cataract surgery for children during the early ages of child development.
“Our brains have to learn to interpret the images that we see,” says Cathy. Although she had cataract surgery as a child, the long term permanent damage was done leaving her with less than 10 percent visual acuity. But this has not impeded her zest for life or her desire to share her gift of singing.
Before her marriage and then having her two children, Cathy frequently travelled across Canada singing and speaking. She made three professional recordings during that time.
While her children were growing up, Cathy went on sabbatical for those years but continued to talk about doing another CD. Two years ago she began planning and in partnership with her pianist cousin from Regina, Judi Hiebert Levesque, this recording came to completion in January 2010.
Cathy is a frequent user of cbm’s home ministry – the Talking Book Library (TBL). The TBL provides free Christian audio books to Canadians who are print disabled.
“Being able to listen to Christian books is really important to me,” says Cathy. “I appreciate them a great deal.”
Last month, Cathy & Judi launched their new CD “Psalms for Pilgrims” in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. They will be performing two concerts in British Columbia in May:
Friday, May 14, 7:30 p.m. at St. Stephen’s United Church, 7025 Granville St., Vancouver
Sunday, May 16, 3 p.m. at Bakerview Mennonite Church, 2285 Clearbrook Rd., Abbotsford
Admission is by donation.
